The term Westphalia designated at the beginning of its history as a settlement area of the Saxon part strain of “Westfalai” a reasonably well-defined historical space. In the Middle Ages and the early modern period there was indeed strong cultural and linguistic similarities within, politically, it was since the early Middle Ages territorially fragmented.
